Joseph John Jakes Sr., 78, of S. Abington Twp, passed away on May 9.

Born in Scranton, he was the sole proprietor of Jakes Garage auto repair shop. He looked forward to planting his garden every spring, loved spending time outdoors and took pride in maintaining his property. He also enjoyed his many trips to the casinos with his wife and best friend, Marlene, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and served as judge of elections for South Abington Twp. for many years. Joe also served in the 109th Infantry Division of the Army National Guard.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Marlene; son, Joseph J. Jakes Jr. and wife, Diane, of Clarks Summit; daughter, Susan E. Menichiello and husband, Joseph, of S. Abington Twp.; brother, Robert Jakes, of Ewing, N.J.; sisters, Katherine Smith, of S. Abington Twp.; and Alice Avery, of Honesdale; five grandchildren, Lisa Marie Graves, Joseph Brian Jakes, John Leonard LaBarr, Laura Ann Jakes and Mary Catherine Jakes; six great-grandchildren; niece, Roberta Kaszuba, of Hamilton, N.J.; and nephew, Michael Chopak Jr.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Catherine Savage Jakes; and a brother, William Jakes.

Joe’s family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff of the ICCU Department at Regional Hospital for their compassionate and extraordinary care during this difficult time.

The funeral will be:
Monday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Clarks Green.

Interment with military honors, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton, will follow.

Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Avenue, Scranton, Pa.
