Florence Joan Sawyer
November 11, 2016
|Florence Joan Sawyer, 72, of Scranton, died Friday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. She was the widow of Joseph T. “Buz” Sawyer Sr., who died in 1987.
Born Oct. 22, 1944, in Scranton, she attended Scranton schools and was a graduate of Scranton State Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital until becoming disabled.
Florence was a caring and loving mother who sacrificed a lot to raise her two sons. Her family and friends knew her best as “Joanie.” She loved animals very much, especially her cat “Mischief.” She was a loving and proud grandmother, who spoke of them often, and they always made her smile. She will be sadly missed, but a saying passed by her son’s father-in-law has provided peace, “to live in the hearts we leave behind, is not to die.”
Florence was chronically ill for many years, and had many wonderful caretakers. Her family would like to express gratitude to those caretakers who provided care and comfort to our beloved mother. Thank you also to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their remarkable care and compassion.
Surviving are her sons, Joseph T. Sawyer Jr. and wife, Leigh Ann, of Greenfield Twp.; and John J. Sawyer and Jennifer McAndrew; seven grandchildren, Joseph III, Patrick, Zakery, Sarah, Vanessa, Samantha and Natalie; her brother, Martin J. Yatsko Jr.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Carol Ann Ady; and her brother, Robert Yatsko.
